systemimager is a waste of time

SystemImager is supposed to be a utility for creating an image from an installed, configured, working, running system, and using it to create more systems identical to the first, with important exceptions such as IP address, hostname, etc.

Everything below was written on the assumption that it works. It doesn't. It's shit. Don't waste your time with it.

This outlines how to use it, based on Debian 7 (Wheezy), although note that the system it's installed on can be entirely different from the systems you use it to copy.

Much of what follows is based on https://www.howtoforge.com/howto_linux_systemimager.

I shall discuss three machines:

  • The SystemImager master, which holds images of machines to be installed
  • The "Golden Client", which is the original machine from which you create an image
  • The target client, which is the machine (or more likely, machines) you want to create from the original image
