FreePBX - where am I?

The second screen you see when starting a FreePBX installation for the first time wants some details about where you are in the world.

It has some slightly odd notions about what classify as different places, though.

For example:

  • The first line (sound prompts language) defaults to "English"
  • The second line (system language) defaults to "English (United States)"
  • The third line (timezone) defaults to whatever your browser suggests

So, from the first two lines, you may think that "English" and "English (United states)" are different things, and if you live in Britain, for example, you might want to keep a nice English voice but change the system prompts to "English" (matching the name of the sound prompts) instead of "English (United States)".

Oh, no. You can't do that.

"English (United States)" is the only "English" option there is for system language. You can't have British English even if you want it.

However, the more surprising thing is that you (hopefully) discover by fiddling around a bit that "English" sound prompts are actually American, and there's a separate "English (United Kingdom)" option for the sound prompts.

Wow, nothing like consistency, eh?
