The Perfect Couple, by Jackie Kabler

Seldom have I come across a character whose frenetic activity and irrationality irritate me quite so much, quite so quickly, at the start of a book.

However, she seems to calm down during the first few chapters (although she still has her moments, throughout the story), and she's worth persevering with.

Overall, I'd say it's a reasonably well-done thriller / detective story, and it's hard to say whether the bits which make me think "that's ridiculous - who would (not) do that in this situation?" are more because they're ridiculous, or because people genuinely do ridiculous things.

Language

  • [Chapter 3] "Glamorous" should have only one "u" in it.
  • [Chapter 5] "Eighteen months later, I'd never been happier. Well, never been happier until Friday of course." Friday was the day someone disappeared, so it makes it sounds as though that was an even happier experience than anything in the past 18 months.
  • [Chapter 7] I don't think a British police officer would discuss a "pay check". It's spelled "cheque".
  • [Chapter 13] "I don't what else to say." could do with a verb in it…

Summary

Not a bad book, by any means, but not a great one either.

The main thing that lets it down is the non-ending.
